These trees grew for over 2000 years in New Zealand before being buried in peat bogs at the end of the last Ice Age. After resting 50,000 years in the absence of oxygen, anaerobic bacteria began to consume the starches within the cells of the wood. In this process the resins in the wood have sort of fossilized into amber. ..You might think of the Ancient Kauri as wood that is impregnated with amber.
